CMA Dominator MX: Round 6

Story & Photos by Eddie Graveline

After a successful summer of high flying motocross action, the California Motorcycle Associationís Dominator series came to an end on the last Saturday in August. School was already back in session for many of the younger riders, but that didn't keep them away from this race. In fact, the series rules stated that the final race was required for championship eligibility and awarded points per moto. With huge trophies and a summer's worth of bragging rights on the line, the turnout was solid.

Tulare, California resident Michael Maze hadn't run the whole series, but came out to enjoy the final round and the incredibly well-prepped Hanford track. The layout was tweaked just a bit from earlier rounds and gave riders something to work on. Work is a good way to describe what Maze did in his numerous classes. He dominated every 65cc race he entered, taking wins in the Intermediate and 9-11 Open divisions. He also put the #727 KTM up front in the popular 65 X class. He was five-for-five in his motos, putting his own stamp on the series and definitely living up to its name.

Yamaha rider Kyle Kessinger made a timely jump up to the Intermediate ranks and saw his first action as such in Hanford. He ran uncontested in the 85cc Intermediate class, but welcomed all comers in the 12-16 Open and X classes. He won every moto in both of those despite strong competition from Michael Orr and Jessy Arthurs, who finished second and third respectively in both.

Craig "Rappo" Ranells made his comeback from a scary injury suffered earlier in the summer. In a freak accident, another rider had landed on him during a practice session, breaking several ribs and separating his right elbow and shoulder. After a couple of months off, he couldn't wait to get back out on the track. The Syndicate/Clawson Motorsports rider had no trouble getting back into his rhythm. He won the Vet Intermediate class, took second in OT Intermediate competition and the +30 X class and finished third in the 250cc Novice class. That was a pretty good night for an old guy coming off such severe injuries.

Of course the biggest draw was the Dominator main event, which was kind of like a replay of a couple previous rounds. Despite being positioned all the way in the back on an inverted start, Yamaha rider Josh Cox cut through the pack with authority. He made it to the front with a few laps to spare and added another victory to a very successful summer.

After the final moto, a series awards ceremony was held for all of the riders. Huge smiles (from the little guys especially) were abundant when the six foot trophies were awarded to class champions. Second and third place finishers made out nicely as well, receiving some nice hardware themselves. Overall, the happy ending seemed fitting for such and enjoyable and successful race series thatís sure to resume next summer.

Making the jump to the Intermediate class didn't phase Kyle Kessinger (17). He won three classes in his first outing with the new title.
Michael Maze (727) was the class of the 65cc ranks. He was undefeated in five motos for the night.
