LA GRANGE, CA. MAR. 14

California motocross racers celebrated the midway point in the CMA Pacific Coast Pro-Am series with a giant event in La Grange, CA. While not very well known outside of Stanislaus County, La Grange is famous among the golden stateís core moto crowd. The county-operated, state-funded park is a great place for young kids just learning to ride or weekend quad warriors, but those types stay away from the northeast corner of the facility. The mountain that sits opposite the entry gate has been carved into one of northern Californiaís most grueling tracks. Rocks, ruts, braking bumps and too many natural elevation changes to count are the theme there. The up and downhill doubles are just icing on the cake. In short, La Grange embodies outdoor motocross and demands every ounce of strength and determination that those who ride it have.

Round 3 of the Pro-Am placed additional demands on everyone involved. It brought the North and Central regions together to create a shootout atmosphere. There was morning practice on Saturday, an Over the Hill Gang race on Saturday afternoon and the Pro-Am on Sunday. The place was already packed on Saturday, so it wasnít much of a surprise to see nearly 600 entries for the big race, which was paying major dealer dollars to almost every class. By sundown on Sunday, every resource, from track to event staff to racers to the bikes themselves, had been used up. Complete exhaustion was all that remained.

From the spectatorís perspective, the obvious benefit for a regional shootout is the opportunity to see racers face unfamiliar competition. Nowhere did that yield more exciting action than in the pro and intermediate classes. The first 125cc Intermediate race saw a group of Yamaha riders out front early. Beau Weigand led Greg Fouts and Greg Karmann early, with Honda mounted Weston Arthurs running fourth. Karmann made a spirited charge to take the lead and hold on for the moto win, while Fouts and Arthurs finished in the final two podium spots. The same group of riders split from the rest of the pack in the second race, but Weston Arthurs was on a mission. He made the necessary passes and edged Weigand for the win. He needed some help to take the overall with 3-1 finishes, but he got it when Weigand put himself in front of Karmann. The latterís 1-3 tally earned him second overall while Weigand (4-2) was third.

Cory McDaniel rode an RMZ250 to a sweep of the 125 Pro action, but it was closer than it appears on paper. For much of the two motos, Adam Miller went back and forth with the Suzuki pilot. Miller eventually settled for a couple of second place showings, while Buffalo Soito was third in both motos and overall.

It would have been tough to find a dirtier, more worn out crowd than the one that slowly exited the La Grange OHV Park that day, but the same could be said of how proud and satisfied they were. The muscle pain and fatigue couldn't be ignored, but as they faded, great stories and fond memories were left in their wake.

Raymond Navarro leads fellow 125cc Intermediate contenders Jonathan Camarena (74) and Beau Weigand (73) early in the first moto.
Showing impressive speed, Cory McDaniel (156) won the 125 Pro class and placed 2nd in the 250 Pro division aboard a Suzukie RMZ250.
There was some great racing in the Intermediate ranks and Greg Fouts (216) was one of the players, finishing in the top five in 3 different classes.
After winning the 250 Pro and Pro-Am classes, Adam Miller (719) would have to be considered the fastest man in La Grange.
